Asthma Is A Disease That Makes Breathing Difficult. This occurs because the Airways in the Lungs swell, fill with mucus, and contract. This can make breathing difficult and cause coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing), and shortness of breath. Asthma is like breathing through a straw; it can't be treated and it's chronic (it lasts a long time), so it's critical to have a treatment plan and see a pulmonologist or it will worsen and cause permanent damage to the airway.

If you have asthma symptoms, Dr Shantha will get your detailed medical history and may order spirometry. This test measures airflow through your lungs and is used to diagnose and monitor your progress with treatment. He may even order a chest X-ray, blood test or skin test.
